SKILLZ – (Magazine design and production).

Produced by John Brown Publishing, SKILLZ was a monthly, visually intensive, irreverent gaming magazine aimed at the younger gamer

SKILLZ really was a great project to work on. Not only did it allow me to get to grips with InDesign (after years of working in Quark), but with the amount of visual material that gaming publishers make available we really had a ball putting the layouts together. When you have literally hundreds of images of robots and spaceships of all shapes and sizes the sky really is the limit!

Of course this meant for a LOT of work – especially as there were only essentially three of us for the most part, putting the magazine together. But still, if you find a job that you enjoy then you’ll never work a day in your life – or at least that’s what they say!

With multiple layers and an inordinate amount of imagery in play on any given page, it really was fun trying to pack in as much eye candy as possible for the younger readers.

I’ve put a selection of spreads online here so people can get the flavour of the magazine, but it’s not until you see the printed thing in the flesh that you really appreciate the work that was lovingly put into each issue!

Joff and Tim, hats off to you guys – I still look back fondly on those days
