Having made the decision to go freelance, the SpongeBob Krusty Kards was the first entirely freelance project I was offered by John Brown Citrus Publishing.
Having worked on a number of other children’s projects for them prior to this, and having built up an excellent working relationship with their existing design team, I was asked if I could artwork multiple sets of the cards prior to them going to press.
Personally I really like SpongeBob (I have a young son so I have the ideal excuse to watch cartoons at any time of the day!), so it was great to be able to handle original SpongeBob artwork. All the images were supplied as Illustrator files, each of which needed tinkering with, in order to overprint correctly as well as coping with multiple special finishes applied to the cards including metallic inks and even “scratch & sniff” applications!
